The opening of DFW International Airport in 1974 was a catalyst for change in this area. From 1979 when Mayor Brown was elected until today, the population of Coppell has grown from 4,000 people to over 43,000 people. Skillful planning with a visionary plan for Coppell’s growth has resulted in a city that sets itself apart. Its parks, highly rated schools, exceptional police and fire services, historic Old Town Coppell and Arts Center are just a few of the many things that make it a great place to live. As Mayor Mays says, “We don’t make decisions for today; we make decisions for the future.”

First named Gibbs in 1873, it changed its name to Coppell in 1892. When Coppell incorporated in 1956, its population was about 400 people.
