John Marion Kirkland (1867-1943) was born in Alabama and came to Coppell around the time that the railroad was completed in 1888. His father, Abner Kirkland, was born in about 1825 in South Carolina and fought in the Civil War. John married Edna Jeanette Stringfellow on 22 Jul 1844. He was a farmer and they built their home, Kirkland House, in 1904 where they had eight children: William Hubert (1918-1962), Lois, Sallie, Jewell ‘Jack’, John Klein, James Stringfellow, Louise, Carroll and an infant who died at 1 year old. In 2011, Kirkland House was moved 474 feet to the east and restored. It is the centerpiece of Heritage Park and is the oldest building in Coppell.
William Hubert is buried at Bullock Cemetery along with his wife Laura Faye Landers Kirkland (1921-2011) and their son Terry A. Kirkland (1945-2002).

Randy Banwart with photo of his grandfather, Carroll Kirkland, who was KIA in WWII. Randy's mother, Beverly Jane Kirkland Banwart, was the daughter of Carroll and Catherine Kirkland. She was born before Carroll went off to war. Randy bears a surprising resemblance to both his grandfather and his great-grandparents. You can read more about him here.
