george coppell imigrates to new orleans
In 1998, former president of the Coppell Historical Society, Wheelice 'Pete' Wilson, discovered that George Coppell was born in Liverpool, England and came to New Orleans. He was employed as the Acting-British Consul. Because of the importance of that position, he made the false assumption that George Coppell was born into wealth and was of a high social rank. The reality is that he was just the opposite. This page will help establish what we know about the early life of George Coppell.
George's mother was Elizabethn(Eliza) Coppell Chilcott. Her first husband was Alexander Coppell. They had one son, Alfred Coppell in 1830. Alexander Coppell died around 1835. Eliza then married Richard Ferris Chilcott. They had a son, George Ferris Chilcott, who was baptized at St. Paul's Cathedral in Liverpool on 27 Sep 1837. Not many years after George's birth, his father, Richard Chilcott, is found living with a different woman. Richard takes up with his young Irish house servant has children with her. In 1851 at the age of 14, George Chilcott is living with his stepbrother Alfred Coppell in Salford which is 30 miles east of Liverpool.
