Audie Murphy was the most highly decorated soldier in American history. He received every military combat award for valor available from the United States Army, as well as French and Belgian awards for heroism. After fighting bravely in WWII, he returned home and became a movie star and song writer. He was born in Kingston, Texas near Greenville and died tragically in 1971 at the age of 45 in an airplane crash near Roanoke, Virginia.
